Hey Matt,

This method still works for me with Leopard. However, please read the update to the post above. Verizon has updated their network, and now additional steps are required to make this work.

Do you know what might need to be changed for Leopard users? This worked fine on my OS-x but after I installed Leopard I could never get it to work again.

Tyler,

This works regarless of whether or not you have a data plan. You will just be billed (voice) minutes for the time that you are connected. Thus, it’s free after 9pm and on weekends :)

Is this only useful if you have a data plan? Won’t your account be billed for the data usage if you dont have one?

I know you can get WAP internet on VZW phones without paying the $5 a month… but you still pay for airtime.

Is this the same?

I tried your method using my iBook G4 and LG Chocolate and it worked flawlessly. It connects instantly. Given the speeds do not compare to cable, it’s very convenient to be able to connect to the internet from wherever I am.

I got it to work on my chocolate no problem. Just a note that if you want to revert back you said to type in terminal:
“sudo rm ../../ppp/options”

but shouldn’t it be

“sudo rm …/../etc/ppp/options”

Hmm… I can’t seem to get this up and running on my chocolate phone. It attempts to connect and then authentication fails every time. I set the phone to 1x only and followed all advice. Any ideas?

My brother is currently trying this on an LG chocolate (2nd gen)…he’s away and has no connection, and is trying to connect.

So far, it’s not working..I’ll let you know if it does.

Hey airwave,

Your phone must be forced to 1X mode because the “@vzw3g.com” login method only works on the 1X network. If the more advanced EVDO network is available, your phone will try to use it by default for all data connections, and your login will fail.

I’m not entirely sure why this is, but if you would like some more explanation, head over to the HowardForums, and I’m sure someone there more knowledgeable than me can answer you.
